Stainless Steel Crowns
When a baby tooth has extensive decay or damage, it can be overwhelming for parents to hear that a crown is needed. At Sunbeams Pediatric Dentistry, we take the time to explain why this option is recommended and how it helps protect your child’s comfort and oral development.
Baby teeth play an important role in chewing, speech, and guiding adult teeth into place. When a tooth is too weakened for a filling, a stainless steel crown allows us to preserve that tooth rather than removing it too early.
🌞Why Crowns Are Sometimes Necessary🌞
Large cavities, fractures, or teeth that have had nerve treatment often need more support than a filling can provide. A crown fully covers the tooth, sealing it from bacteria and preventing further breakdown.
🌞What a Stainless Steel Crown Is🌞
A stainless steel crown is a pre-made metal cap designed specifically for baby teeth. While it may look different from a natural tooth, it is extremely durable and built to withstand chewing, grinding, and everyday wear.
🌞What the Appointment Looks Like🌞
During the visit, we gently remove decay and shape the tooth so the crown can fit securely. We then select the best size from our available crowns and cement it in place. The process is efficient and designed to minimize time in the chair.
🌞Life After a Crown🌞
Children adapt quickly and usually forget the crown is even there. It allows them to eat comfortably, smile confidently, and keep that tooth in place until it falls out naturally.
What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?
Most dental emergencies fall into one of three main categories:
- Health
- Function
- Aesthetics
Are you unable to eat, or do you have a chipped front tooth that’s too embarrassing to face work or school? If so, you need an emergency dentist who can see you as soon as possible, ideally the same day.
Some of the most common dental emergencies we treat include sharp or broken teeth, gum swelling, pain, and hypersensitivity. Other frequent issues include soft tissue lesions, such as ulcers under dentures, abscessed teeth, and traumatic injuries. Our team is here to provide prompt and compassionate care when you need it most.
